Dev Log : Platform 1

Hi everyone! Welcome to the Steam Wheels Devlog!

I'm David, one half of the Steam Wheels team (yes, it's just JKUB and me!). So, where to start? Well, I guess at the beginning...

JKUB and I have always dreamed of making a game together. We've had tons of ideas, but they've all fizzled out. Either they were too ambitious, or after talking it through, we realized we wouldn't actually want to play them ourselves! That all changed recently.

After months of walking, thinking, and dreaming, JKUB came to me with THE idea: Steam Wheels. I was instantly sold!Steam trains have always held a special place in my heart.

I remember the first time I saw one thundering past me and my grandad in a pub garden over 25 years ago. I've always loved playing video games, too.But there's an elephant in the room: I'm not a game developer! Sure, I've dabbled in Unreal Engine, and my day job involves solving logic based problems all the time, but this is definitely a big leap into the unknown!

Our main goal has always been to create a game that we're 100% happy with and would want to play ourselves. That shouldn't be too hard, right!?

Unreal Engine - First Steps

In the first session, my goal was to refresh my knowledge of the engine. I started with the basics: Could I control an existing piece of art? How would I do it? Should we even attempt this?Within a couple of hours, I was fully immersed, blueprints flying everywhere until there it was.
Our small test route had a train.

A player-controlled train!

Yeah, it was zooming through the level at what I can only approximate was about 500Mph but it works and I was the one controlling it. More importantly, it was incredibly fun.I cleaned up the messy blueprints and explored the Character Movement component.

After adjusting the speed, acceleration, and ground friction, we had a very early prototype.Filled with excitement, I sent the project to JKUB.

The first session was a success, and I achieved my goals. While I'm not a professional game developer, perhaps I do have what it takes to create a game.

Thanks,
David
